Regulatory Harmonization and ANVISA’s Specialized Framework
Brazil’s regulatory body, ANVISA, has established the most advanced framework in South America for "Custom-Made Devices." In 2026, this framework has been harmonized across the Mercosur trade bloc, allowing for the easier movement of 3D-printed medical components between Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay.
This document outlines the shift from regulating the product to regulating the process. Since every 3D-printed implant is unique, regulators focus on the validation of the software, the purity of the metal powders, and the sterilization protocols used in the hospital labs. This "Process-Based Certification" ensures that even though every implant is different, they all meet a standardized safety and quality threshold, providing a blueprint for other developing regions globally.
